Stefania Matteoli

Stefania Matteoli obtained the B.Sc. and the M.Sc. (cum laude) in Telecommunication Engineering in 2003 and 2006, respectively, from University of Pisa, Italy. She then received the Ph.D. degree in Remote Sensing from the “Leonardo da Vinci Engineering Ph.D. School” of the University of Pisa in 2010, discussing a thesis on hyperspectral image processing for difficult target detection.

From May 2008 to October 2008 she was a visiting research scholar at the Digital Image and Remote Sensing (DIRS) laboratory of the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (CIS) of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Rochester (NY), investigating into atmospheric radiative transfer modeling in spectral signature-based target detection.

In January 2010 she joined the “Remote Sensing and Image Processing Group” of the Department of Information Engineering (DII) of the University of Pisa, first as post-doctoral research fellow and then, in January 2016, as temporary researcher, focusing on several research topics in the arena of remote sensing and multi-dimensional signal processing while co-advising several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.

Over the years, she participated to several international and national research projects, working in collaboration with researchers and engineers from national and international research institutions and companies. She also cooperated to research studies for the development of new sensors such as airborne hyperspectral sensors (with Selex-ES, now Leonardo s.p.a.), underwater fluorescence LIDAR sensors (with CNR), and hyperspectral spaceborne sensors (with the Italian aerospace agency, ASI, and CNR).

Since March 2008, she has been lecturer fellow at University of Pisa, teaching “Design and simulation of remote sensing systems” for the M.Sc. degree course in Telecommunication Engineering and “Environmental remote sensing systems” for the M.Sc. degree courses in Telecommunication Engineering and Geophysics.

In January 2017 she became Researcher at the National Research Council (CNR) of Italy, within the “Applied Electromagnetics and Electronic Devices” group of the Institute of Electronics, Computers and Telecommunication Engineering (IEIIT).

She is author of more than 45 works published in international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, among which two review papers and one invited paper, and of several invited talks and technical seminars. Her research interests include anomaly and object detection in hyperspectral remotely sensed images, modeling and characterization of complex backgrounds in hyperspectral images, atmospheric and in-water radiative transfer modeling, fluorescence LIDAR signal processing for underwater object recognition, and spectroscopic signal processing for food safety and traceability applications.

Dr. Matteoli is member of the IEEE, of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, of CNIT (Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni), and of GTTI (Gruppo nazionale Telecomunicazioni e Teoria dell’Informazione). Since 2008, she has been serving as reviewer for several international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, Journal of Applied Remote Sensing, International Journal of Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Infrared Physics & Technology, SPIE Newsroom, and Pattern Recognition Letters. In September 2014, she was recepient of the “SPIE Remote Sensing Best Student Paper Award” within the “Remote Sensing of the Ocean, Sea Ice, Coastal Waters, and Large Water Regions” conference.
